Give customers an extra reason to say yes to your upsell recommendations with automatic discounts that apply at checkout.

The Update

Upsell Discounts lets you create automatic discounts that apply exclusively to products added through your upsell flows. Unlike discount codes that customers need to enter, these discounts appear automatically at checkout—showing on order confirmations and invoices just like any other Shopify discount.

This gives you a powerful conversion tool: customers see they're getting a special deal, but only when they add products you're actively recommending.

What's New

Flexible Discount Types: Choose between percentage discounts (like 15% off) or fixed amounts ($5 off). For fixed amounts, control whether the discount applies once per order or to each qualifying item.

Smart Targeting: Apply discounts to all upsell products, specific products, or entire collections. Products must be added through an upsell flow to receive the discount—regular cart additions don't qualify.

Purchase Requirements: Set minimum cart values or item quantities before discounts kick in. Create "spend more, save more" promotions that encourage larger orders.

Buy X Get Y Deals: Require specific products in the cart before the upsell discount applies. Perfect for bundle promotions like "Buy any coffee maker, get 20% off coffee pods."

Stacking Control: Decide whether your upsell discounts combine with other product, order, or shipping discounts your store offers.

Impact on Your Store

Upsell discounts create urgency and perceived value at the exact moment of decision. When a customer sees "Add this accessory and save 15%," they're more likely to convert than with a standard product recommendation.

Common setups include:

  • Accessory incentives – 15% off any item from your accessories collection
  • Volume rewards – 20% off upsells when cart reaches $100
  • Bundle deals – $10 off complementary products when key items are in cart

Configuration

Navigate to Upsells → Discounts in your sidebar, then click Create discount.

Set your discount name (customers see this at checkout), choose your discount type and value, configure any minimum requirements, and select which products qualify.

Toggle discounts active or inactive without deleting them—useful for seasonal promotions.

Why This Matters

Converting upsell impressions into actual adds is where the revenue lives. Automatic discounts remove friction and add incentive at the critical decision point, turning more "maybe" moments into completed sales.
