NEW: Full Smart Collection Support for Upsell Triggers
Your Smart Collections now work as upsell triggers with every rule type Shopify offers—no restrictions, no workarounds.
The Update
When you use a Smart Collection as an upsell trigger, EliteCart needs to know which products belong to that collection. Previously, some of Shopify's more advanced rule types couldn't be evaluated directly, which meant certain Smart Collections wouldn't trigger upsells as expected.
We've removed that limitation entirely. EliteCart now caches product membership for all Smart Collections on the backend, so every rule type Shopify supports works out of the box.
What's New
Metafield Conditions: Smart Collections using product or variant metafields as rules now work as upsell triggers. If you've organized products by custom attributes like material, season, or brand tier, those collections are fully supported.
Product Category Conditions: Collections built on Shopify's product taxonomy (category) rules now trigger upsells correctly. Use Shopify's standard category system to group products and target upsells accordingly.
Inventory Conditions: Stock-level rules work as expected. Collections that include or exclude products based on inventory counts can now drive upsell flows.
Price Conditions: Rules based on product price, compare-at price, or whether a product is on sale all function as upsell triggers. Perfect for targeting upsells at specific price tiers.
Impact on Your Store
If you've been using manual collections as a workaround for unsupported Smart Collection rules, you can now switch to Smart Collections and let Shopify handle the product membership automatically.
This means:
- Less manual upkeep — Smart Collections update themselves as products change
- More precise targeting — Use any combination of Shopify's rule types without restrictions
- Simpler setup — Create your collection in Shopify, select it as a trigger, done
Configuration
No changes needed. If you already have Smart Collections set as upsell triggers, they now evaluate all rule types automatically. To use a Smart Collection as a trigger, navigate to Upsells → Flows, open or create a flow, and select your collection under the trigger conditions.

Smart Collections are one of Shopify's most powerful organizational tools. Full support means you can build sophisticated upsell targeting using the same collections you already manage in Shopify—without maintaining separate product lists.
